Who is this course suitable for?

There are two versions of this course; one for plumbers and operators, and one for supervisors and managers.

The version of the course for plumbers and operators is suitable for plumbers who:

  • …hold a professional qualification (NVQ Level 2 or higher) with a valid certificate in WRAS Water Regulations and at least two years of professional experience

  • …carry out work on the water supply system and wish to specialise and develop their skills/service offerings

The version of the course for supervisors and managers is suitable for anyone who:

  • …is responsible for management of water systems in properties under their control.

  • …wishes to specialise and develop their skills and services, including minimising risk and upholding safety measures.

About the Legionella Prevention and Water Treatment (LPWT) Course

The Legionella Prevention and Water Treatment (LPWT) course is a specialist LCL Awards accredited qualification. There are two versions of the course available:

  • Legionella Prevention and Water Treatment – For Plumbers and Operators

    The version designed for plumbers, engineers and heating specialists wishing to develop their skills, including cleaning domestic water systems.

  • Legionella Prevention and Water Treatment – For Supervisors and Managers

    A less hands-on version of the course designed for non-technicians, helping you understand, prevent and treat Legionella and water-born illnesses.

The LPTW course is designed to help plumbing and operational professionals comply with the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) Approved Code of Practice for Legionnaires’ disease. The course will help learners comply with their legal duties, including:

  • identifying and assessing sources of risk#

  • preparing a scheme to prevent or control risk

  • implementing, managing and monitoring precautions

  • and keeping records of control measures taken.

The plumber and operator version of the course also includes practical guidance on how to disinfect and clean a domestic-sized water system.

How is the Legionella Prevention and Water Treatment (LPWT) Course delivered?

The course is taught over a single full day, at our Stafford training centre. The syllabus covers a range of topics (see the LCL Awards page on the LPTW course for details).

How is the Legionella Prevention and Water Treatment (LPWT) Course assessed?

To pass, you’ll need to complete a written multiple-choice assessment based on the HSE’s Approved Code of Practice for Legionnaire’s disease and other relevant documents.

If you are unsuccessful, you will be referred and have the opportunity to retake the exam at a later date. If you need to retake the exam, you will receive a free re-sit.

What are the next steps after earning this qualification?

Once you have earned your qualification, we will offer you support on next steps.

This can include connecting you with partner organisations and clients who are in need of qualified installers or maintenance engineers, either on a direct of subcontracting basis.

The course is not designed to cover large commercial water systems, water towers, or cooling systems in any depth.

What experience/qualifications do I need to enrol in the Legionella Prevention and Water Treatment (LPWT) Course?2023-10-18T12:31:16+01:00

Depending on the version of the course you wish to enrol in, you will need to fulfil the following requirements.

  • For the plumbers and operators version of the course, you must hold a professional qualification (N/SVQ Level 2 or higher) with a valid certificate in WRAS Water Regulations and (ideally) at least two years professional experience.
  • For the supervisors and managers version of the course, you don’t need any formal qualifications; however, you should have a good understanding of water systems and current best practice legislation.

If you were unable to successfully pass the assessment phase of the course, you would be referred and together, we’d work out what approach is best for you.

If a candidate wants to retake their exams, we provide you with the opportunity to re-sit any module exam for free. We’d also work with them to ensure they can further develop their skills and practical experience, giving them the confidence and knowledge to hopefully pass their exams this time round.

If we or the candidate feels they need more significant support or that the course isn’t suitable for them, we would work with the candidate to work out the best outcome for all.
